1 INT - OFFICE HIGH-RISE – NIGHT
SHADOW RUNNER
I am designation HK-017 and I am a Shadow runner.
My job, my purpose, is to obtain the files and
deliver it to my employer, by any means necessary.
This building is a syndicate facility holding data on an
energy device.
The Shadow runner (HK) hacks into the security cameras of the building and disables them. There are 2 guards one is patrolling the offices while the other is at the security station. With the cameras disabled the Shadow Runner only needs to deal with the office guard.
HK tosses a small device down the hall; it blinks a red light that catches the guard’s attention.
SECURITY GUARD
Huh?
He investigates. HK swiftly moves in from behind uses his wrist weapon to spray a mist into the eyes, nose and mouth of the guard. He’s out cold. With the threats gone HK enters the main office. To get the files he needs to interface with the mainframe of the computer. This is where the job gets… difficult.

2 EXT– VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE – NIGHT RAINING
To hack any system a Shadow Runner must form a neural link within the mainframe. Therefore, the job is so dangerous. A system failure within a mainframe can cause the hacker to be thrust into a permanent comatose state.
The cyberspace is its own city. Complete with buildings and people as well as VR assassins. A VR death equals comatose for the shadow runner.
HK scans his surroundings. This cyberspace looks like Tokyo. To find his target he needs to do some detective work. Near an alleyway is a shop keeper. HK makes his way to her. He flashes a photo of the target. (In cyberspace system files and folders are represented as people) A suspect matching the photo sees HK and fearfully runs away.
HK
I entered closer than I thought, Gotta go!
HK enters a pursuit of the Data File. The File is not too far
and isn’t moving so fast. HK will reach his target easily. If only
it were. Laser fire comes over HK’s shoulder.
POLICE
Stop right there! You are to be killed on site!
HK
Then why the hell would I stop! Are all AI this
stupid?
HK continues to run but is tackled by yet another officer. He is forced to fight. In Cyberspace the AI are programmed in martial arts techniques, but the hacker isn’t. If he isn’t trained, then he would be no match for the AI. HK is a master of the fighting arts. The three engage in ruthless combat. One officer aims the gun, but HK kicks it out of his hand into the crowd of onlookers. The other officer pulls out a baton and the continue to fight. After a few blows the officer goes down leaving only the unarmed officer. The AI grabs HK in a choke hold. HK jabs him in the ribs and flips the AI by the head over his shoulder. HK quickly incapacitates the AI.
Now that the threats are eliminated HK can continue his pursuit. Except that the File has disappeared.

Soaking wet, HK seeks some shelter from the rain. He enters a club, HK approaches the bar.
4 INT – NIGHT CLUB – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE
WOMAN
You look like you could use a drink. Hey, get my friend here a
cyber-ale.
HK
I don’t know you.
WOMAN
I’m Maggy, you don’t know me, but I know you’re a
Shadowrunner.
HK
It’s that obvious, huh?
MAGGY
I saw the fight you had with the police. I also
know that file you were chasing.
HK
Do you now?
MAGGY
He’s pretty high profile around here. He works
for the Syndicate.
HK
Aw shit.
MAGGY
You didn’t know you were trying to hack a
syndicate file.
HK
Nope. It’s too late to bug out now though.
Where’s syndicate HQ?
MAGGY
Center of this sector. The high rise tower.
That’s where he’ll be.
HK
Perfect. Look thanks for the drink but I
gotta get out of here.
MAGGY
Why what’s the rush? You know where to
find him.
HK
He’s syndicate, so that means the Tokyo Cyber
Squad are probably on their way down here
as we speak.

5 EXT – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE - NIGHT RAINNING
HK exits the nightclub and sure enough three motorcycles screech up and swerve in front of him. It’s the Tokyo Cyber Squad and their leader climbs off the bike and stares down HK.
HK
Took you long enough.
At that moment Maggy storms out of the club with a bar stool screaming bloody murder. The distraction allows HK to move strategically. The cyber squad begin to attack. Two are fighting HK while the other is being held back by Maggy who’s swinging the bar stool.
HK uses martial arts to defend himself. He is blocking both attackers and countering with strikes of his own.
Meanwhile Maggy has been disarmed and is fighting hand to hand. Maggy blocks a punch and counters with a spinning backfist. The cyber squad member is down for the count.
HK dodges a kick and grabs the Cyber squad member throwing her into a stack of garbage. After this he spin kicks the leader and knocks her out. HK sees the motorcycles idling nearby.
HK
Let’s go.
Together he and Maggy ride off towards the tower.

6 INT – THE TOWER – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE - NIGHT
A large cybernetic man wearing a black suit smashes his fist from behind his desk. The impact cracks the wood.
SYNDICATE LEADER
The Shadowrunner did what?! I want
him killed!
A lackey stands in the office suite.
LACKEY
Sir, um… he defeated the Tokyo
Cyber Squad. He and a companion
are heading to the tower. They are
expected at any moment.
SYNDICATE LEADER
Then activate the fail safe.

Fail Safe

7 EXT – SYNDICATE TOWER FRONT ENTRANCE – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE – NIGHT
HK and Maggy screech to a halt in front of the tower.
MAGGY
Are you sure you want to head in this way?
HK
They already know we’re coming. By now
the fail safe has been activated.
MAGGY
Are you serious? Oh man, what did I get
myself into?
HK
Look, it’s not too late, just get on that bike
and ride. But I got a job to do.
MAGGY
No. I’ve got your back.
SMASH!! The Fail Safe crashes through the front doors of the tower expelling concrete and debris everywhere. The Fail Safe is a robot Mech that is AI controlled. It’s fully armored and equipped with heavy laser weaponry.
HK
Take cover! I’ll draw its fire, when I say,
get around behind it.
Maggy runs behind a car avoiding the laser fire from the Mech. HK activates a mechanism on his wrist. An exo-suit surrounds his body. Now he moves faster and is more agile. HK doges and flips over the lasers.
HK
Get behind it…NOW!
Maggy swiftly runs in an arc toward its back. However, the Mech sees her coming and whacks her with its arm sending her coursing through the air into a brick wall.
HK
MAGGY!!
The mech blasts HK with a laser in the chest while he was distracted. He is knocked back. He gets up and runs toward Maggy while dodging the incoming laser blasts.
HK picks up Maggy and hops on the motorcycle. The mech is blasting at them as they escape down an alleyway. It’s time to regroup.

8 EXT - ALLEYWAY – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE NIGHT
Maggy is cut and bleeding from her head. She regains consciousness.
MAGGY
I’m not dead?
HK
Nope. But we need a plan. That Fail
Safe is a lot more deadly than I
expected.
MAGGY
We need to overload it’s mainframe.
HK
To do that I’d need to hack into it with my
wrist CPU
MAGGY
But that’s too dangerous. If you fail you’ll
be stuck in cyber limbo forever. They say that’s
a fate worse than death.
HK
I know. But I’ve got no choice.
The two get up. It’s time for the Shadowrunner to Strike Back.

Strike Back

9 EXT – SYNDICATE TOWER FRONT ENTRANCE – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE – NIGHT
HK and Maggy return to the tower. The Fail Safe enters battle mode again. HK powers up his CPU and begins the hack.
10 EXT – INTERPLANETARY SPACE – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE – NIGHT
HK finds himself in yet another virtual cyberspace, like a dream within a dream. He is manifested as a fighter jet space craft. HK uses his ammunition to destroy the incoming missile attacks from the virtual Fail Safe.
He zig zags all around avoiding attacks while firing his arsenal into the Mech. A well-placed disruptor shocks the mech, stunning it enough for HK to fire a missile into the chest of the mech destroying it.
11 EXT – SYNDICATE TOWER FRONT ENTRANCE – VIRTUAL CYBERSPACE – NIGHT
HK awakens back in virtual cyberspace outside the tower. The Fail Safe has been deactivated.
MAGGY
You did it!
She embraces HK and together they run into the tower.

System Collapse

12 INT – SYNDICATE TOWER LEADER’S OFFICE SUITE – NIGHT
HK and Maggy crash down the door of the office suite.
LEADER
I knew you’d make it this far. But you’ll never
finish this hack as long as I’m activated.
HK
So I’ll deactivate you.
The leader rises from behind his desk. He is huge with mechanical arms. The leader has a robotic sledgehammer.
HK uses his CPU to manifest a cyber samurai sword.
The fight begins. The leader matches HK blow for blow. HK uses his agility and skill to avoid the deadly hammer attacks. The fight rages on. Neither combatant losing a step.
There is an electrical panel on a nearby wall. HK knows he can use it to immobilize the Leader. He flips toward it, dodging a massive hammer swing. HK is in front of the panel when the Leader swings again with immense force. HK slides away and the hammer impacts the panel sending electricity coursing through the leader. HK uses his sword to take the down once and for all.
The hack is complete, and HK vanishes without a chance to say goodbye to Maggy.
13 INT - OFFICE HIGHRISE – NIGHT
HK is back in the real world. His PDA beeps, he examines it to see funds appear in his account from his employer. The job is done but knows by now that it never ends.
